After calling Virat Kohli a selfish player during the 2023 ODI World Cup, former Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Hafeez reaffirmed his position, saying he still stands by what he said about the standout Indian batsman.
During a recent podcast interview, Mohammad Hafeez stated that he was correct to label Kohli as selfish at that particular moment. Former cricket players Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan were also on the show. “I think I was right that time,” he responded when questioned about his remarks on Kohli. Considering the entire situation, I believe that your goal should always be to win the game, regardless of the other players. Your goal should, in my opinion, always be to do whatever best enables you to contribute to the team.”
I will never put up with someone stopping themselves from making big shots in the nineties. “Why couldn’t he play the same shot when he was on 95 or 92 if someone is taking five balls to reach his hundred and his intention changes after the hundred?”
“It should always be your goal to find the best method to bring that value to your team,” the speaker said. In my opinion, Virat Kohli did not play big strokes in the game and needed a lot of balls to reach his hundred.”
“Perhaps you will understand what I was saying if you go through his century again,” he continued. Personal achievements, in my opinion, have no place in cricket. Since even one run counts in the game of cricket, we don’t want to see your fifty, hundred, or five wickets if they are not contributing to the winning cause.”
What had Hafeez stated in 2023 on Virat Kohli?
Virat Kohli’s batting struck me as being egotistical, something that has happened three times in this World Cup. “On a cricket show, Top Cricket Analysis, the former captain of Pakistan stated that he didn’t prioritize the team, instead focusing on getting a single in the 49th over to reach his own hundred.” This is a video of him making such statement in 2023.
Mohammad Hafeez. ‘I saw sense of selfishness in Virat Kohli’s batting and this happened for the third time in this World Cup. In the 49th over, he was looking to take a single to reach his own hundred and he didn’t put the team first’.#INDvsSA | #ViratKohli | #RohitSharma pic.twitter.com/50VoKGXZhq
